10 Years of Video Art in Indonesia

Film director and artist Hafiz selected a collection of works titled ‘10 Years of Video Art in Indonesia,’ a joint project with the OK. Video Festival and an alternative artist group ruangrupa.

DocLab’s Works

Based in Hanoi, DOCLAB is an art center for documentaries, experimental films and videos. Founded in 2009, DOCLAB has been working to take film and its audience back into the realm of the individual. Taking documentaries beyond “objectivities,” Hanoi DOCLAB explores the unknown in-between spaces: between objective observance and subjective experience, fiction and non-fiction, the public and the private.

A blanket area

There were so many cameras at the Candle Demonstration in 2008. I also had a camera but I could only shoot at daytime because I brought a super 8 film camera. I could never film the candle or water bomb parades in early June when the daytime was not so long.

Pictures at an Exhibition

The old lady selling flowers on the street let their children in her hometown. They came this much later on / The number one national treasure also burned up this much but came back / She said she could not get back to the hometown.

Searching for Dead Dogs

My grandmother’s home has a mystery. Whenever my grandmother takes care of a dog, it dies. This project explores essayistic personal documentary film as an artful and moving humanly rich form, following the track of grandmother’s life story.

Unfinished Work

So the matter of colonization became a replacement for the issue of not using Japanese ways of speaking or watching movies commemorating Yoo Kwan Soon. Identical indicators of sub-main agents (margin, women and the non-center) who have been oppressed and excluded in the nation-state are examined through historical context.

Habitual Sadness 2

They are no different from the elderly women we see everyday. However, they are all marked by pain and sorrow from their shared history of being “comfort women” during World War II. They became subject to prejudice in their own homeland after their return to Korea.

How to Disappear Completely

A young girl from the countryside dreams of disappearing. She plays a lonely game of hide-and-seek while her mother quotes the Bible and her father relishes in alcohol. She decides to put on a stage play based on an old Philippine film about a family who disappears in the mountain during the war.
