SeMA Biennale Mediacity Seoul 2016 features more than 80 artworks by 61 artists and collectives invited from 24?different countries. The exhibition will run from September 1st through?November 20th?in all four branches of the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA): Seosomun Main Branch, Nam Seoul Living Arts Museum, Buk Seoul Museum of Art and SeMA Nanji Residency.?NERIRI KIRURU HARARA is a festival of contemporary art during which international artists and citizens gathered at SeMA’s branches will share not only information and knowledge but also intellect and emotion. As they learn from and befriend one another, they will investigate and propose multiple potentialities?for diverse futures.

NERIRI KIRURU HARARA traces the process through which the living body, especially the human one, escapes from the selfish gene and transforms into biofact?technoscientifically created man-made living beings.?It also attempts to deconstruct the concept of normalcy and the existing languages that pressure those marginalized by society, including the disabled and the children.

Mediacity Seoul has been closely related to Seoul's history and urban structure since its starting point at the turn of the millennium. This is because the development of science, technology and media changed the urban appearance and enhanced the civic imagination while at the same time restricting it. Mediacity Seoul is also directly tied to the operation of SeMA: the museum has consistently updated its aims to align with changing concepts of contemporary art and media, continually synchronizing these with its citizens’ artistic cultivation. Mediacity Seoul is situated at the center of the cultural magnetic field of the city and the museum.
The city of Seoul, a megacity populated by 10 million people, is planning to establish 13 additional museums and spaces dedicated to visual culture within the next five years. We can foresee that the future transformation of the city’s texture and energy will be caused by art institutions all over the city approaching more closely the emotions of its citizens. Mediacity Seoul 2016 understands that museums, the executive institution of contemporary and media art, are yet again rising as the locus of cultural agency that constitutes the future of Seoul. Within this context, three museums and one residency have been selected to simultaneously divide and connect Seoul's many centers, with their different histories and economic structures. The four locations are being recharged and rearranged as locations for SeMA Biennale where exhibitions, workshops, camps, programs and performances are taking place.
